BIOGRAPHY

Martin Tillman

The world's most listened to cellist and Hollywood film composer

Martin Tillmann, born 1964 in Zurich, is internationally reknowned for his incredible experimental acoustic and electric cello in the Film and Music industry. Growing up in a musical family where his parents ran a boarding school and music camps he developed a deep love for the human sound of the cello.

Not satisfied with the classical cello, Martin pushed the boundaries and create a revolutionary sound of his own. Playing with many artists , such as Elton John, Sting, B.B. King, Toto, Shaka Khan, Beck and more.

Martin’s reputation preceded him, leading Hans Zimmer to bring him to Hollywood as the first electric cellist on the movie “The Fan” (featuring Robert De Niro). Since then Martin has been the cello soloist and additional film score writer on over 100 movies and TV shows. In 2006 and 2012, Martin performed with Sting and Hans Zimmer at the Academy Awards.

Some credits include: Mulan, Spiderman, War on the Planet of the Apes, X-Men, Batman Dark Knight Trilogy, Pirate of the Caribbean 1-5, Transformers, Iron Man, Superman, The Martian, Da Vinci Code, Angel and Demons, The Passion of Christ, Ali, The Ring, Shrek, Hannibal, The Pledge, Mission Impossible II, Black Hawk Down, Cries of Syria and many more.

The great German Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer got in touch by phone while I was on tour with the band Air Supply in Australia. "This is Hans," he said into the answering machine. "Can we meet up sometime?" We met when I returned to L.A. I visited him and marveled at 'the gigantic studio.' Then he said the following: "I have no idea exactly what you do, but let's get started!" The collaboration turned out to be very fruitful. The sound of my electric cello can be heard in over 100 Hollywood films.

Eva was the love of my life, I helped to care for her, looked after I also looked after her at night. She was an incredible woman, always looked always looked after me, was pleasantly direct and motivated me in my work. In April 2019 I had to let her go.

  10. Superhuman: world premiere

The German Hans Zimmer, for many years the most sought-after composer in Hollywood, describes Martin Tillman's electric cello as his "secret weapon". You never know what sounds Martin will produce with this instrument. Now Martin Tillman is bringing his first live programme "Superhuman" to Zurich with a mix of rock'n'roll, electro dance music and classical music. The elaborately staged spectacle includes a high-calibre rock band, ten cellists, a percussionist, a soul singer and a light show. For me, "Superhuman" is a very special project. His wife Eva suffered from MS for many years: during the difficult time before Eva's death in spring 2019, the music that Martin Tillman composed for the album "Superhuman" was a sound world of joy and lightness and a counter-design to their shared suffering.
